TRABA

Traba's lake and dunes shelter some bird species carried by hurricanes from the American continent to the Atlantic shores.

Great bird observation spot

Traba's beach, one of the longest in Galicia with almost 3 km. long, forms an interesting ecological whole with its dunes, lake, and the Penedos de Traba, Traba Rocks, an atypical granitic sort classified by Isidro Parga Pondal as Traba Pink Granite

Traba's lake, old King Afonso V's playground, is almost 1 km long. In winter stormy days, the furious salted Atlantic waves jump over the placid waters of the lake, creating a very original contrast.

Among the Galician natural areas, the lake of Traba has got a high relevance: the bird species which have arrived to Europe from the American continent mainly choose Traba as their habitat.

Some of the most interesting bird species found here are the Rallus aquaticus, Ixobrichus minutus, Locustella luscinoides, Acrocephalus scirpaceus, Acrocephalus arundinaceus and the Charadrius alexandrinus

Traba's lake and dunes are also a migratory stop for the very rare Acrocephalus paludicola, one of most threatened birds on Earth. Another attractiveness of Traba is the hibernation of the Burhinus oedicnemus and the Aythya fuligula, which sometimes have reached in number more than 1OO birds, like in the winter of 1980.
