Historical-Artistic
town of Muros
Muros is one of the best conserved medieval
villages in Galicia. Civil architecture is overcome by religious
constructions since the town belonged to Santiago-de-Compostela:
San
Pedro's church, primitive parochial church from the X century.
Antigua
Colegiata de Santa Maria and San Pedro de Muros' current Parochial
church, in which the ogival style prevails over the remains from
XII century. Some sepulchres from the XV and XVI centuries are conserved.
The Colegiata was created in 1504 by Bull from Pope Alexander
IV at the request of Diego de Muros, who wanted to avoid tithes
payment to Santiago's Church.
Santo Espirito's Chapel, built in rural
gothic style, located between Muros and Louro. The tradition says
that the Saint's image
was found on a beach.
Hermitage of Nosa Senora das Neves,
built in the XVIII century, where there is a sacred fountain.
Sanctuary of Virxe do Camino, built
in the XVI century. It has got a white marble bassin donated by
some sailors in 1557, a frigate reproduction hung from the roof,
and some interesting votive offerings. Popular tales say the Saint's
image was found on one of Muros' beaches.
Hospital de Lazarados, embedded to
Virxe do Camino's Sanctuary, mentioned in documents from 1421
and 1490.
Other great buildings of interest are the
Hospital da Trinidade, founded by Diego de Muros in 1418;
San Marcos's Chapel, dated from 1480; Santa Isabel's Chapel
and cross; Nosa Senora das Angustias' chapel, founded in
1665; San Xose's church, built in 1727; San Roque's Hermitage,
built in 1765 over the original construction; and the Virxe do
Carme's church, from 1767.
