In
1982 he was given the prize of naive painters awarded by the Barrié
de la Maza foundation, being Professor Xose Filgueira a member of
the panel of judges. The work awarded was the "A Batalla do Ebro".
He
carried out many exhibitions in Santiago de Compostela, "Hostal
of the Catholic Kings"; his works were at the "Pazo Quiñones de
Leon in Vigo, at the Museum in Pontevedra, and then they did a route
throughout Galicia.
We
are talking, above all, of a great idealist, an extraordinary creator,
and a constant organizer.
In
one of his talks he said repeatedly: "we are all naive paintors".
Naive is a beginner and one paints because he feels that wish. This
he told the children of Vimianzo in one of his conferences about
naive painting. At the Public School of Cabana "Bergantiños", he
told the children all about his inventions.
HOME
AND FAMILY
He
lived in a beautiful farm house, noble style, particular, interesting
and worthwhile visiting. The house has mansion chimney with two
ovens embedded on the wall. An own dump and fields which surround
it, on which a you can find a sawmill.
Here
he lived with his wife. Erundina with whom he had three sons and
one daughter. One of his sons works in the sawmill and at sea, the
other son studied in Lugo and his daughter was emigré in Switzerland
of whom the painter had his granddaughters, Lucia and Silvia.
Life
for this borneirense could not have been very easy, already an elderly
man he had to maintain his family, he had to go to work at the feituria,
a power station in Valencia.
THEMATIC
OF HIS WORK
In his
work "Lema" he has employed, above all the thematic which can be
observed in his paintings:
Religious
Subjects: Saints, Christ, The Virgin, The Trinidad.
Social habits: Hostess bars, drugs.
Historical: Funeral subjects like the Dombate dolmen, Celtics
like the Borneiro city and others, the Romans, the Ebro Battle .
Trade subjects: The timberworkers.
Ethnographic or popular subjects: The Holy Compaña, mills.
Other
works talk about things like the countryside, but we also count
with a self-portrait.
Among
his pictures he carried out one in which the main character is the
Virgin Fatima.
His
creations are located in distant places: Borneiro, Cabana, A Coruña,
Palas de Rei, Switzerland and many more.
TECHNIQUE OF HIS WORKS
To carry
out his creations he employed acrylic, watercolors, oil painting,
tempera.
Firstly
he drew a sketch on paper, then he put it on to a canvas, then he
corrected it and he pointed out the figures and all the elements
which made up the picture. Finally he prepared the temperas and
when it was all finished he gave it a special glaze.
His
painting have been carried out on canvas and card. He prepared the
canvas himself.
He
stopped using oil painting because it affected his health.
He
always repeated that his tecnique depended on "you like what you
do" due to this he asked himself questions before beginning a painting.
One
of his many qualities is not to hurry nor to have whims, he had
a great interest to know the opinions of those who had ordered a
painting from him.
MANUEL
LEMA OTERO
Manuel
Lema Otero was a straightforward, simple, noble, helpful person.
A very popular Galician, who loved his land.
He
was always willing to listen, and he felt the necessity of informing
himself with things. He never rejected the opportunity of obtaining
new ideas.
In
his paintings you can see the reality of things, such as he saw
them, felt them and as he was told by other people. He takes great
care of simple details, informations, the ways and needs which flow
his consciousness to give art his art.
He
likes to create, express, be witness to those far distant lands
which are distant from our lifes with all his live and eagerness
to show us that detail we are looking for.
