  The painter from Borneiro, from the same mount where the Celtic Cidá is located.
He worked as the following mentioned: timberworker, farmworker, sawyer, painter, sculptor, modeler, builder and inventer.
 
 

In 1982 he was given the prize of naive painters awarded by the Barrié de la Maza foundation, being Professor Xose Filgueira a member of the panel of judges. The work awarded was the "A Batalla do Ebro".

He carried out many exhibitions in Santiago de Compostela, "Hostal of the Catholic Kings"; his works were at the "Pazo Quiñones de Leon in Vigo, at the Museum in Pontevedra, and then they did a route throughout Galicia.

We are talking, above all, of a great idealist, an extraordinary creator, and a constant organizer.

In one of his talks he said repeatedly: "we are all naive paintors". Naive is a beginner and one paints because he feels that wish. This he told the children of Vimianzo in one of his conferences about naive painting. At the Public School of Cabana "Bergantiños", he told the children all about his inventions.

HOME AND FAMILY 

'Beetohven AUN GOZAMOS HOY CON TUS MELODIAS'He lived in a beautiful farm house, noble style, particular, interesting and worthwhile visiting. The house has mansion chimney with two ovens embedded on the wall. An own dump and fields which surround it, on which a you can find a sawmill.

Here he lived with his wife. Erundina with whom he had three sons and one daughter. One of his sons works in the sawmill and at sea, the other son studied in Lugo and his daughter was emigré in Switzerland of whom the painter had his granddaughters, Lucia and Silvia.

Life for this borneirense could not have been very easy, already an elderly man he had to maintain his family, he had to go to work at the feituria, a power station in Valencia.

THEMATIC OF HIS WORK

In his work "Lema" he has employed, above all the thematic which can be observed in his paintings:

Religious Subjects: Saints, Christ, The Virgin, The Trinidad.
Social habits: Hostess bars, drugs.
Historical: Funeral subjects like the Dombate dolmen, Celtics like the Borneiro city and others, the Romans, the Ebro Battle .
Trade subjects: The timberworkers.
Ethnographic or popular subjects: The Holy Compaña, mills.

Among his pictures he carried out one in which the main character is the Virgin Fatima.

His creations are located in distant places: Borneiro, Cabana, A Coruña, Palas de Rei, Switzerland and many more.

 


TECHNIQUE OF HIS WORKS

To carry out his creations he employed acrylic, watercolors, oil painting, tempera.

Firstly he drew a sketch on paper, then he put it on to a canvas, then he corrected it and he pointed out the figures and all the elements which made up the picture. Finally he prepared the temperas and when it was all finished he gave it a special glaze.

His painting have been carried out on canvas and card. He prepared the canvas himself.

He stopped using oil painting because it affected his health.

He always repeated that his tecnique depended on "you like what you do" due to this he asked himself questions before beginning a painting.

One of his many qualities is not to hurry nor to have whims, he had a great interest to know the opinions of those who had ordered a painting from him.

Manuel Lema Otero was a straightforward, simple, noble, helpful person. A very popular Galician, who loved his land.

He was always willing to listen, and he felt the necessity of informing himself with things. He never rejected the opportunity of obtaining new ideas.

In his paintings you can see the reality of things, such as he saw them, felt them and as he was told by other people. He takes great care of simple details, informations, the ways and needs which flow his consciousness to give art his art.

He likes to create, express, be witness to those far distant lands which are distant from our lifes with all his live and eagerness to show us that detail we are looking for.
