Extraordinary
devotion to Nosa Senora da Barca.
Facing the wild Atlantic Ocean, Nosa Senora's
Sanctuary is the one of the oldest and most important religious
centers in Galicia. Inside the church there is the Virxe da Barca's
gothic sculpture, numerous votive offerings hung from the roof, and
the sepulchres of the Counts of Maceda. Many travelers have written
since the XIV century about the extraordinary adoration to Nosa Senora
: Rosalia de Castro, Lopez Abente, Garcia Lorca...
Old
Celtic Sanctuary, the Church decided to christianize it in the
XII century building a small hermitage that was transformed to the
current temple in XVII century. The legend tells that the Virgin came
here to comfort the Apostle when he showed affliction because of the
impossibility to christianize these lands. The remains of the Virgin's
stony boat, placed in front of the christianized Sanctuary, transformed
the Celtic stones' cult into a veneration for Virgin Maria.
Thousands of pilgrims
meet every year in front of the church to move the huge flat stoneby
balancing it, and this way, continuing an immemorial tradition
often practised in the Celtic countries and registered in
the Arthuric tales: only the goodwill person will be able to move
the stone.
Foggy

of Camarina's creek, Cape
